Crowns

How we replace weak, cosmetically “imperfect” tooth structure with natural-looking, durable dental crowns

The tooth enamel is the strongest part of our bodies. However, this may become damaged or weakened due to conditions like decay. Behaviors like chronic teeth grinding can also quickly wear down tooth structure. This process may lead to chips and other cosmetic concerns and can weaken the teeth, making them vulnerable to further internal damage.

Fortunately, Park Dental Care serving Winfield, Illinois, and the greater western suburbs, is equipped to replace portions of a tooth marred by decay, fractures, and other conditions that negatively affect its health, function, and esthetics. From our office in Carol Stream, Drs. Evelyn Maggos and Britly Barton may recommend dental crown services to:

  • Repair large cavities that cannot be adequately treated with conventional fillings
  • Hold together parts of a broken or cracked tooth
  • Restore a tooth’s strength and healthy structure following root canal therapy (to preserve an infected tooth and avoid the need for extraction)
  • Cover up and restore the esthetics of a severely worn-down, poorly-shaped, or stubbornly-discolored tooth, or for other cosmetic dentistry purposes

Crowns may even be used to replace teeth that cannot be saved with root canal therapy and through other restorative dentistry procedures. Crowns are applied to neighboring anchor teeth in a dental bridge. The crowned anchor teeth hold the prosthetic in place. Crowns may also be used to restore an implant and as the finishing touch in the process. The crown is held in place by the implant, which is connected to it and functions like a natural tooth root in the jawbone.

Steps toward a happier, healthier smile

As you can see, crowns are incredibly versatile. However, most patients with healthy tooth structure should generally expect to have a small amount of that natural tissue reduced. This step is necessary. So the crown will fit snugly on top of the reshaped and reduced tooth. Crowns may be fashioned from various materials, including ceramics (like porcelain) and metals (like gold). We will discuss the pros and cons of each option to pinpoint the best material for your situation and needs. After the crown made from one or a combination of these materials is cemented to the tooth, no further treatment may be necessary.

With good care at home and regular visits to our Carol Stream, Illinois office, your crown can last as long as a natural tooth – for the rest of your life.

We will also check and confirm that your crown is in top shape during routine check-ups. Call 630-556-8880 to schedule an appointment at Park Dental Care today.
